Empty nose syndrome (ENS) in Otolaryngology 2023

Empty Nose Syndrome (ENS) is a possible complication of nasal turbinate surgery. ENS is a clinical syndrome often referred to in the medical literature as a form of secondary atrophic rhinitis. People with ENS usually have turbinectomy (removal or reduction of turbinates, nasal structures) or other surgical procedures that reduce or damage the nasal turbinates. Due to the lack of reliable epidemiological studies and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) code, the overall incidence of ENS is unknown.

People with ENS can experience a variety of symptoms, the most common of which are nasal congestion, dry nasal crusts, and difficulty breathing. This condition is caused by medical procedures and may be caused by surgery or procedures involving nasal turbinates. This includes both minor "conservative" surgical procedures and total turbinate resection. It is commonly seen in people who have unobstructed nasal passages after surgery but who report choking or nasal congestion. The doctor thought that ENS was restricted to patients with total turbinectomy, but further research discovered his ENS in patients who underwent various turbinate surgeries/procedures.
